In 1940 the team won their second World Series title after defeating the Detroit Tigers. The team faded as an NL power in the 1940s and early 1950s. The team peaked in 1975 and 1976, becoming the first NL club since the New York Giants of 1921 and 1922 to win successive World Series titles. The Reds won another division title in 1979, the club was led by pitcher Tom Seaver.

Lou Piniella guided Cincinnati as manager and to its fifth World Series title in 1990. Larkin fronted the club to the Central Division title and captured the division title in the 1995 season. Some of the players of the club that made into the hall of fame are Jake Beckley, Johnny Bench, Jim Bottomley and Mordecai Brown.
