Some Advice for Camping with Children

If you think there’s a lot of effort involve in planning and preparing for a camping trip with your kids, you’re right. It can also be a little bit more tiring and stressful than your usual camping trip with your wife.

You will likely have to make some sacrifices if you’re going to take your kids camping. Camping is an experience the kids will remember their whole life so it’s well worth it.

The precious time that you are able to spend with your kids at the trip—playing, exploring nature, and doing camping activities are simply rewarding. You won’t mind the extra effort especially if you love your kids so much.

Here are some tips you can start out for a smooth camping trip:

- Kids love to be involved in what their parents do because it makes them feel they’re useful so let them. Ask for their input and make them of what they would need for a camping trip. Allow them to pack their own stuff but make sure you supervise them.

Treating their opinions with respect gives them that confidence boost they need as they grow up the chance to be involved also teaches them responsibility.

- You don’t need an expensive sleeping bag for kids. A cheap kids sleeping bag does the job well enough.

- If you do backyard camping beforehand you’ll discover anything that you missed during planning and preparation so you can adjust accordingly.

- Teach your kids to pitch their own tents and other simple and safe tasks so that they can help out.

- Set up some safety rules like not to wander too far away from camp to prevent unwanted incidents.

- Gather round the campfire at night for some story telling.

- Take the kids on day hikes and show them the wonders of nature.

- Don’t forget to teach them how to keep themselves safe at the camp. No playing with fire and no swimming in the lake alone are just some of the many rules they have to be familiar about.

- Try to make every camping chore a game to kids interested in doing them

- Take your kids birdwatching and carry some binoculars so that your kids are interested.

- Pack some insect repellent and sunscreen.

- A flashlight or glow stick will help the kids feel more secured at night.

- Among the things you can do at night is star gazing.

- Don’t forget to bring the very important first aid kit for small accidents or mishaps.

- Have some night snacks. Not inside the tent of course. Before you go to sleep, a few chats and chips will surely be a great finale to a great day.

- Bring something for the kids to play with like binoculars or magnifying glass.

- Make sure you capture these priceless moments by bringing a camera and ample film and batteries.

Family camping trips are a fun way to spend quality time with your children. Although it takes double the effort, just seeing the delight on their faces or hearing their squeals of laughter all make the trip worthwhile.
